MediCal for Long Term Care
What is it?
MediCal is needs based health care insurance.
What does it do for me?
With respect to long term care, MediCal will pay the difference between your income and the cost of skilled nursing
care should you require it.  MediCal does NOT pay for assisted living.  MediCal will pay for some at home care, but
ONLY if your income is very low.
How do I qualify?
To qualify for MediCal for nursing home support, your assets can consist of only your home, your car, and $2,000.
Your income must be less than the cost of the nursing home plus your Medicare Insurance.  Your spouse may have
up to an additional $99,000 in assets of their own.
What if my spouse has no income of their own?
The at home spouse may retain additional assets to fund income, and may have income transferred from the spouse
in a nursing home, up to $2489 a month of income.  This figure is not a cap on the community spouses income but
only on transfers.
Will MediCal make a claim against my estate?
MediCal may recover against the value of your home but only after the deaths of both you and your spouse.
